The Black Twig. We had 4 off this two year old tree. Discovered in 1830 in Fayetteville TN by Major Rankin Toole. It keeps well and sweetens as it stores.

Picked the Roxbury Russet today. Not a bad little crop for a young tree. Can’t wait to share these, my favorite apple in the orchard so far.

Earlier in the week Pastor Chuck came to a training I was leading. When he found out we had an orchard, he invited us to come and meet one of his church members. Yesterday we got to meet Tim. He and his family own and run #NewRoyalOrchards. It’s a massive orchard operation. (Over 200,000 trees) Tim took the time to show us some new varieties and talk shop. Lots of learning yesterday. Thanks to Pastor Chuck for making the connection.

What a fun day yesterday. Katie at @lynoakenfarms let us explore their heirloom section. They have over 70 varieties. We got to see some examples of some the ones we grow and then see some ones we want to add. If you are ever in the Medina NY region go by and get your favorite heirloom variety. They also have some modern varieties.
