Winesap

Winesap

While said to originate in the late 1700s in New Jersey, and once widely grown in many parts of the US, the south-east is home for this beloved heirloom. Smaller than many apples, this pretty red apple has an intensely crisp, vinous flavour. Described as a cider apple in 1804 by Dr. James Meade, this very dependable and adaptable long-growing tree produces a heavy crop. In personal experience this very juicy apple is good for dessert, but unless you like a runny pie, I would use another.

Great cider apple and one of Charles’ favorites.
