Esopus Spitzenburg

Esopus Spitzenburg

Possibly the favourite apple of Thomas Jefferson, Spitz dates from 1790 in Ulster County, New York. A likely parent of the Jonathan apple, Spitz lacks the beauty of its’ offspring. Rather a mottled, spotty apple, its’ looks bely the complex, spicy flavour. While tending toward biennial bearing, Spitz is great for cider and fresh eating. It comes ripe in late September and early October.
